In this first episode, I establish definitions, ramble on about linguistic issues, and share my backstory about why I left The Cult of Christianity.
This show features "Sexperts," Erica Smith, Melissa Spiers, and Claire Jones discussing the topic of sex and purity culture within the Christian faith. They discuss how shame, guilt, and fear are used against young men and women to keep them from becoming sexually active and educated. The three, plus John, discuss America’s lack of sex education in schools, how our culture promotes sexual abuse, and explore why such a natural part of life is so stigmatized.
Cierra and Lilly join John, to tell the truth about the abuse, the dangers, and the bad religious practices of Christian counseling. Everyone can experience suffering from unqualified and undereducated "therapy" practiced in Christian churches and communities. Ethics of Christians providing healthcare, as well as analysis of evangelicalism, is explored and serious questions are raised about biblical counseling, pastoral care, and whether this concept serves a frightening cult's agenda.
John's good friend, Mylee, comes on to discuss how purity culture benefits the patriarchy both inside and outside of church.
John's friend, Fin, shares his wild story of being recruited, "trained," and psychologically maltreated, all in the name of becoming a Christian leader. The story gets more and more shocking as it goes on, and has a terrifying conclusion
Asha Dahya, reproductive justice advocate and founder of GirlTalkHQ, understands the obstacles facing people in need of healthcare. She joins John to discuss why abortion is a human justice issue, the racist history of the medical establishment, and how the cult of Christianity controls our bodies.
John Verner and Chris Loux went to the Moody Bible Institute in Spokane, Washington in the years leading up to the Trump era. Like most guests of Chapel Probation, they came in on fire for their respective brands of fundamentalist faith, with John coming from a Calvinist background. Amazingly, these two became unlikely friends through their shared love of music, even though Chris had a completely different background. They both quickly began deconstructing their faiths as they learned more and asked questions. What really impressed me, though, is how these two white men, coming from vastly different backgrounds, both began decolonizing in the midst of some pretty hard deconstruction of their theologies and their faiths. They saw the overt racism, anti-LGBTQIA hatred, and misogyny in evangelical culture, and they pushed back.
In this episode I chat with John Verner - a journalism student at NYU, host of the Cult of Christianity Podcast and former-Evangelical Christian. During our conversation, John discusses his journey through devout and unwavering belief in Christianity, through to his waking up and ultimate deconstruction. He also answers the question - Is Christianity a Cult?
Thank you John, for all the work you do!
Dom L'Amour speaks with good friend John Verner about his definition of a cult, his journey with religion, "The War on Christianity" and so much more.
People sometimes ask, 'If you hate Christianity so much, why do you keep talking about it?'"
In this episode of the Called to be Bad Podcast I talk with author and podcaster John Verner about how...you guessed it...Christianity is a cult! We contemplate questions like: Are all cults bad? Can you redeem a cult?? What do we do if we love Christians, love Jesus--but don't want to be in a cult?
